Artist's Statement

After receiving a degree in Advertising Design from the Parsons School of Design, and a Masters Degree in Art History from Hunter College in New York, I worked as an art director in major NY ad agencies.  I took advantage of the city’s great museums and galleries, and trained as a painter and printmaker before turning to photography.

I quickly found that black and white could evoke powerful graphic images, bathed in natural light.  Both documentary and candid photos revealed a complex relationship between architecture and the human presence; often enhanced by accepting the element of chance and happy accident.  Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank and Gary Winogrand were major influences.

Color, on the other hand, can be very seductive, establishing a mood and offering a deeply emotional experience.  In my stock photography work for the printed page, color captures the richness and beauty of our surroundings and provides a visual record of memorable places I’ve seen.

My photos have appeared in numerous juried exhibitions in Washington, and and galleries across the country.
